Artfolk is a documentary portrait film focused on visual artists across Illinois whose work spans a wide range of practices, environments, and communities. The project centers on painters, sculptors, assemblage artists, and other visual artists whose practices are rooted in personal vision, lived experience, and material experimentation.
Each portrait is filmed within the artist’s own working environment—whether a dedicated studio, home workspace, storefront, barn, garage, classroom, or other space where the creative process unfolds. The emphasis is on observation over performance: hands at work, materials in transformation, accumulated objects, and the rhythms of daily practice that shape each artist’s visual world.
The project is structured as a feature-length documentary composed of multiple interconnected portrait segments, following 5–7 visual artists from diverse communities across Illinois. Many work in rural or small-town settings, while others come from different regions and working contexts across the state. Each segment functions as an intimate study of material process, environment, and artistic identity, while together forming a unified portrait of contemporary creative practice across Illinois.
Rather than focusing on finished objects alone, the filmmaking approach treats creation itself as the central subject. The work is intentionally handmade and responsive, reflecting the methods and sensibilities of the artists themselves. It prioritizes tactile imagery, natural light, and observational presence, with occasional experimental techniques when appropriate to the subject matter.
Artfolk explores how art emerges from personal histories, local communities, and distinctive working environments, creating a broader portrait of Illinois’s diverse artistic landscape. The completed film will be shared through community screenings, library presentations, and regional arts networks to ensure accessibility within the communities represented, while contributing to a larger archive of contemporary visual culture in the state.
